This Place Sucks

* * *

I was, to be sure, rather drunk when I arrived there. I had hoped that the drunkenness would be an adequate cushion for what I was sure was going to be an unpleasant atmosphere. You see, I'm always nervous about places that say they are melding local art with local music to create a "community". Chalk it up to my cynicism or the ease with which I can decide that I hate something, but these kinds of places rarely work out well.

Nervertheless, when I heard that my favorite local band was going to be playing a stripped down set there I had to go (fun fact about me: My overdeveloped sense of obligation extends to people I've never met). I was prepared for some level of pretentiousness (hence the drunkenness) but this place was out of control. I hadn't seen so many hipsters since HipCon '03 at the Velvet Lounge. Nobody there was interested in the art or the music. They were there to be able to tell people that they were there. Helping the "community".

As much as I wanted to relax and enjoy the band I could help repeatedly thinking, "I can't believe I ditched out on my friends and Spinal Tap for this shit!".
